It all depends on what you consider mountain biking. I started riding a true mountain bike in 1995, but I was riding off-road on a three speed English bike in 1964. We were living in Philadelphia. The contractor building the neighborhood made a flat marshy area and we built trails on it to ride. Some guys rode beach cruisers, some rode three speeds like mine, and we just had fun. We even made wooden bridges out of doors.
